Eszter the Seer, in Waubaushene Ontario, used to have a running advertisement for psychic readings in a buy-and-sell magazine that was very popular in the area, called the Marketeer.
It was always there, on the same page, showing a black and white photo of her sitting at a table with cards, along with her phone number.
I had always been curious about this, as but it wasn't until I was 22 that I had my only visit with her.
By then, I had already owned my first deck of tarot, and had been lucid dreaming, and probably had already gotten my hands on the Seth books. But I wasn't out in the community as a reader myself at all.
A friend called me to see if I wanted to go, and had me call Eszter up. I was so excited, I wanted to see her that afternoon. Eszter gently but firmly let me know that she wasn't available that day, and I could come in a few days at an evening time.
On the evening, my friend and I drove from Midland, down Highway 12, past Port McNicoll and Victoria Harbour, all the way out to the Waubaushene address. I don't remember who went first - me, or the friend - but there was a little waiting room outside of the little office, that she had us in for our readings one at a time.
When it was my turn, she read what she called Gypsy cards for me first. I was so curious, and they were so different from the Tarot cards that I was just beginning to study. She said some things that were very true in that moment in my life. She pinpointed the stress and said "Don't worry about that."
Then she looked at my palms. Among other things, she said to me "See this line? It tells me you walk in two worlds." and then she gave me a long knowing look. "And this line says you'll live a long life."
She told me about a past life, which at that point I already had my own suspicions about. when Eszter confirmed it for me without me even hinting at it, that was the beginning of other things making sense for me in regards to all sorts of stories in this life.
This was my first reading from someone else, and sitting with Eszther had a huge impact on my world. To see someone doing this as their job really planted a seed for what I could do in my own life. I loved the vibe of little waiting room, and the intimate private reading room that she invited me into.
Eszther recorded my reading on a cassette tape and that gave me the idea to encourage my own tarot clients to record their readings. (I wish I could find the reading that I had all those years ago with her! It really is helpful to refer back to a reading again and again. )
She advertised and put herself out there, despite how some folks might react.
last week, Eszter and the whole experience I had at her Waubaushene office popped into my head. I tried to find something online about her, and coudn't. And then one of my own tarot clients mentioned that she used to live in this area, and would go to see Ezster.
This week, out of the blue, another friend shared this newspaper clipping of Eszter from 1987. Synchronicity! I've typed it all out below, as the writing is quite small and faint.
All in the Cards
Eszter the Great Seer, a Waubaushene resident, shows the tarot cards with which she predicts future evvents. Eszter runs a palm and tarot card reading business out of a room in her home. She says she usually wears jeans and a halter top, but dressed up a bit of the newspaper cameras. "I don't mind the stereotype," she said, "What the heck."
Psychic Works 10 to 8
For Eszter Bokfi, reading palms and predicting the future is as normal a job as selling real estate or working in a factory. As a matter of fact, ten years ago she did work in a factory. Sometimes on breaks and lunchhours, Eszter would read her coworkers’ palms or tell their futures with tarot cards. But nine years ago, she says, she was laid off and decided to turn her unusual interest into a full time job. Nothing strange or unusual about that. Happens every day. But it’s not every day that someone decides to make a living playing around with the supernatural. Now, she fills in “palm reader” on her tax forms and once, was called for jury duty but was turned down after she said what she did for a living. Bokfi (who advertises as Eszter the Great Seer) says she was taught the ancient craft by a gypsy in her native Hungary. Now, she has even taught her husband Steve enough for him to work part time as a psychic. The two work out of their home in Waubaushene. Bokfi says her neighbours have grown used to the signs outside her house saying ”Palm reading, tarot cards, open 10 a.m to 8 p.m.” Her customers (“I get lawyers, policemen and one politician- but I can’t say his name”) are led into a small room with a padded door to prevent anyone outside from hearing. She turns out the lamp, lights a candle, and turns on a portable cassette recorder. All readings are taped for the customers. Eszter tells her customers whether they will win a lottery, stay in their jobs, live to see 75 or fall in love. She even says she can tell how many lovers a person will have in their lifetime by “counting the hairlines a the end of the heart line.” “But I never do,” she says. I don’t want to embarrass anybody.” Among her predictions for 1987 are: that people born under the Aquarius sign with have health problems (“That includes Ronald Reagan.”); there will be a lot of plane crashes; and there will be a major medical breakthrough. That’s because this year is influenced by Uranus, which causes unexpected technological events. And for the next three years, she says ominously, the planets will be lined up much the same was when the Second World War started. “That’s why I was scared this year – I thought World War Three would start. Fortunatley, it hasn’t – so far.” Next year there will be a lot of court cases, little pockets of war and fires, under the influence of Mars, she predicts. Most of Bokfi’s customers are from Orillia, Midland, and the surrounding communities. She says some even call her to ask what is the best day to get a haircut. No problem, she says, she can figure that out in a few minutes. But what does a psychic do outside of business hours? Shop, go to parties, watch TV and – for this psychic, she loves to ride her motorcycle. To Ezster Bokfi, there is a supernatural explanation for everything. Her hold on the other world extends also into numerology and astrology. “Monday is ruled by the moon.” She says. “On Monday, everybody is moody. It’s not because the weekend is over and everybody has to go back to work. It’s because Monday is ruled by the moon.” For the skeptics, she says: “Take it with a grain of salt. That’s what I tell all my customers. Enjoy the reading. If you want to dismiss the bad things, fine.”
